Coworking has become a popular way for people to separate home and family time from work time by sharing space with other creative, independent people who, together, create a synergy that energizes and inspires. Coworking is popular all across the country, including in Honolulu, but it’s a new idea in upcountry Waimea where, ironically, this open office concept has now found a “home” in the 160-year-old Historic Spencer House.

Coworking usually involves floating desk space. Co-workers arrive on their own schedule, bringing with them a laptop, ear buds and other required equipment and materials. Included in the fee is wifi service, electricity and black-and-white printing. Coworking spaces offer conference rooms for more privacy for group meetings, skyping or teleconferences.

All of these possibilities are available in Spencer House Coworking at reasonable rates: Free for the first day; floating desk: $10/day, $35/week and $85/month; and reserved desk: $150/month.

The inaugural member of Spencer House Coworking is Rama McIntosh, who has been telecommuting from home in Waimea but decided he needed to separate work and home life.

McIntosh, a software developer with 25 years of professional experience, specializes in custom, massively scalable cloud systems, Ruby on Rails web applications, and native iPhone apps. He is vice president of engineering for Contix, Inc., a tech startup based in Honolulu, which analyzes social media to identify breaking news events for finance customers.

For more information or to check out the space, email McIntosh (rama@myutil.com).

The 160-year-old Spencer House was built in the mid-19th century as a stately home in the center of Waimea town and saw the town grow up around it. In addition to serving as a residence, it has housed a trading post, courtroom, hotel, offices, gift shop and restaurant. Now, a volunteer group is working to transform it into an exciting 21st-century gathering place for Waimea.

For information about using Historic Spencer House for meetings, workshops and special events, including weddings, email Betsy Sanderson at bas1001@aol.com, or call 938-2897.
