Patrick calls this “My Pop-Up Show,” and it will be open for the entire month of September. Since the show will be gone after the month is over, there will be a number of receptions to encourage folks to stop by. The first viewing reception will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4; First Friday reception, at 6 p.m., and 6 p.m. Friday receptions again on Sept. 19 and 26.

Hawaii Preparatory Academy will host admission events for prospective students and families this fall.
Prospective day students entering grades 9-12 and their parents may register for one of six open house events that will be held on Sept. 16, Oct. 13 and 22, Nov. 13 and 18, and Dec. 3. All high school events begin at 8:45 a.m. and end at 11 a.m., followed by an optional 30-minute question-and-answer session. Guests will receive an in-depth look at the school’s academic, athletic, visual and performing arts programs, and more. Each high school event is limited to 20 guests. An open house for prospective students entering grades 1-8 and their families will be held at the Village Campus from 8:30-11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 7. School administrators, current students and parents will provide information about the academic program and the benefits of an HPA education. Students and their families also will have an opportunity to visit classrooms, meet teachers, and learn more about Lower and Middle School curriculum and activities. Coworking has become a popular way for people to separate home and family time from work time by sharing space with other creative, independent people who, together, create a synergy that energizes and inspires. Coworking is popular all across the country, including in Honolulu, but it’s a new idea in upcountry Waimea where, ironically, this open office concept has now found a “home” in the 160-year-old Historic Spencer House.
Coworking usually involves floating desk space. Co-workers arrive on their own schedule, bringing with them a laptop, ear buds and other required equipment and materials. Included in the fee is wifi service, electricity and black-and-white printing. Coworking spaces offer conference rooms for more privacy for group meetings, skyping or teleconferences.
All of these possibilities are available in Spencer House Coworking at reasonable rates: Free for the first day; floating desk: $10/day, $35/week and $85/month; and reserved desk: $150/month.
The inaugural member of Spencer House Coworking is Rama McIntosh, who has been telecommuting from home in Waimea but decided he needed to separate work and home life.
McIntosh, a software developer with 25 years of professional experience, specializes in custom, massively scalable cloud systems, Ruby on Rails web applications, and native iPhone apps. He is vice president of engineering for Contix, Inc., a tech startup based in Honolulu, which analyzes social media to identify breaking news events for finance customers.

The 160-year-old Spencer House was built in the mid-19th century as a stately home in the center of Waimea town and saw the town grow up around it. In addition to serving as a residence, it has housed a trading post, courtroom, hotel, offices, gift shop and restaurant. Now, a volunteer group is working to transform it into an exciting 21st-century gathering place for Waimea.
